The Cost of Coverboard
Our number one search term over the last year has been the “cost of coverboard”. I did a search to see what coverboard was and while I wasn’t able to find out for sure, I was able to gather that it has something to do with book binding in the age old publishing business, of which we are in – albeit a digital one.
Whether it’s coverboard or “cover board”, the cost is most certainly higher than printing online, but because the barrier to entry is so low, there is much competition. However, much competition belies much good content, but while it is true that volume of publications have gone up due to the success of blogs and the like, the number of good or quality publications has only gone up slightly. It is true that certain individuals with talent that were previously denied a voice have now found their outlet online, but the majority of writers are not any better just for having been published.
Ed Dale wrote on his Facebook Page, “Self Publishing Superstars – It warms my little cottontails,” about the link, Meet The A-List Authors Of E-Book Self Publishing. The gist is that authors who self-published their books have traditionally done it out of desperation as a result of being ignored or rejected by publishing houses. Traditionally without the marketing muscle of a publishing house, most of those self-published books were doomed commercially, but the world of self-publishing is changing fast in the digital era. A growing number of authors are making a nice living selling their own e-books, often at $0.99 a pop.
So now it’s not just the Internet and blogs. E-readers are changing the publishing landscape too, but at least e-reading devices put the printed word back in your hand, and once it’s in your hand, you’ll need a cover, which may just include a little coverboard inside.
